The Apostles' Creed - Lesson 11A: The holy, catholic church, The communion of saints

The Apostles' Creed
Lesson 11A: The holy, catholic church, The communion of saints

I believe in God, the Father, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, his only son, our lord;
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead and buried.
He descended into hell,
And on the third day he rose again;
He ascended into heaven,
Where he is now seated at the right hand of God, the Father, Almighty,
Whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The holy, catholic church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.

Amen.

Ephesians 4:4-6 [4] There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling; [5] one Lord, one faith, one baptism, [6] one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.

CHURCH

The Main Points for This Lesson:

The purpose of this series of lessons is, using the Apostles' Creed, to teach the essential teachings of the Christian faith and what it means to believe them. To state it simply, the goal is to teach what we believe and what it means to believe it.

The Apostles' Creed has three main sections. The third section begins with the Holy Spirit. In this lesson we will learn about the second part of this third section: “...The holy, catholic church; The communion of saints.” To keep this simpler and shorter, this lesson will be split into two lessons, the first considering the church as holy and catholic, the second lesson that the church is the communion of saints.

The meaning of “church.” In the New Testament, many English translations use the word “church” to translate the Greek word “ekklesia.” Some translations use the English word “assembly” to translate this word. This word is not used to refer to a building, but always to a group of people.

The church is holy. The church is holy for (at least) two primary reasons.

First, the church is set apart (holy) from all other groups in the world because God has set the church apart. He has done this by purchasing the church by the blood of Jesus. He also makes the church holy, or set apart from all other groups of people, by dwelling in the midst of his chosen people.

Second, the church is holy because the people that make up the church live holy lives. Christians are not people who have joined a club, or that meet at a particular building at certain times, but Christians are people who have left the kingdom of the world with its sinful ways to live for God and his kingdom with its righteous ways and laws. The church is holy because it is made of people who have chosen to live holy lives with and for the one holy God.

The church is catholic. The church is catholic, or universal, for (at least) two reasons.

First, God has made it plain that the church is not limited to one location, language or nationality. Christ, with his blood, purchased for God people “out of every tribe, language, people, and nation” (Revelation 5:9).

Second, God is one and has so made the church to be one. By its very nature it cannot be less than universal. The apostle Paul spoke of the church as one in his letter to the Ephesians (4:4-6). One body – Christ as the head has only one body; One Spirit – God has given one Holy Spirit to his people, to gain the same spirit of holiness in their lives; One hope – We all hope to attain to the resurrection unto life eternal with God; One Lord – We hear and obey one and the same king of kings and lord of lords, Jesus Christ, the Son of God; One faith – The living faith, which faith alone counts with God, by which men humbly and faithfully hear and obey the Lord to the end; One baptism – Dying to sin and self and living for him who died and rose again, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, this is the one baptism spoken of by Jesus and his holy apostles; One God and Father of all – There is no other.

What does it mean to believe this? Those who believe this will value the people of God above buildings and forms. They will treat the church as holy, with honor, fear and trembling, considering that it is not a light thing to be part of the church of God (Acts 5:11,13). Those who believe this will love one another, and not limit that love to a location, language, nationality, etc. They be diligent to understand and preserve the unity of the spirit, and be careful lest they trade the unity of the spirit for the unity of form, leadership, methods, or music, etc.

Suggestions:

Open each lesson with prayer for the teacher and the students and this class time.

Remind the children that we are using the Apostles' Creed to teach the essential teachings of the Christian faith, that is, what we believe and what it means to believe it. Read through the Apostles' Creed with the children.

For the purpose of these lessons, we have broken the creed into twelve parts. Let the children know that today we will talk about the ninth part: ...The holy, catholic church; The communion of saints. In this lesson, we will talk about the first half of the ninth part.

Ask the children what they think the word church means. What is the church? After they give their answers, help them to understand that in the Bible, the church is not the building, but the people of God.

Read the story of Rahab in Joshua 2:1-24; 6:1-25. As you read the story to the children, you can ask them questions: Joshua 2 - What did Rahab do different from the rest of the people of Jericho? (helped God's people); What did she do for the spies? What did she ask the spies to do for her? What did the spies tell her to do to be delivered from destruction? (tie the thread, stay in her house, not tell others about the spies). Joshua 6 - How was Rahab's house different from every other house in Jericho? (Rahab’s house was holy, in that it was set apart from every other house.) Did she do what the spies said? Was she delivered from the destruction of Jericho? This story can help the children understand how the church is holy. Just as the spies gave the scarlet thread to set the house apart, so Christ shed his blood to set the church apart. Just as the people in the house had by faith sided with God and his people instead of siding with the walls of Jericho and its people, so those in the church have chosen to follow God and his ways and no longer follow the world and its ways. Make the clear connection for them between Rahab's house being holy and the church being holy.

Tell the story of Acts 10:1-48. It is a long story, and likely too long to read the whole chapter. Provide a shortened version of the story for the children. The important points to convey through the story is that at one time the church was mainly Jewish people. They were not sure if other people who were not Jewish could be part of God's holy church. God sent Peter to a Gentile named Cornelius, a man who feared God and worked righteousness. As Cornelius and those with him heard Peter's message, the Holy Spirit came upon them just as it came upon the Jewish disciples at Pentecost. So God plainly showed that people from every nation could be part of God's holy church.

Close the lesson with prayer related to the subject and the students. Pray the Lord's Prayer together.

Stories:

Joshua 2:1-24; 6:1-25
This is the story of Rahab in Jericho. In Rahab's house we see an illustration of the church being holy. The spies gave her a scarlet cord to set her house apart from the other houses. Our Lord shed his blood to purchase the church, to set it apart from all else in the world. Those gathered in the house of Rahab put their faith in God, siding with God and his people rather than trusting in the strength of the world and the walls of Jericho and siding with wicked men. In short, those in Rahab's house has turned from the world to be on God's side. Those that make up the church are those who have turned from sin and living for themselves and have chosen to live for God by faith in Jesus Christ.

Acts 10:1-48
This is the story of the apostle Peter and Cornelius. This is one step God took to clearly teach his children that the church is not limited to one people or nation, but the church is in fact catholic or universal. It is open to all who fear God and work righteousness (Acts 10:35).

More Stories and Examples:

Joshua 22:1-34
The two and a half tribes have completed their service and are allowed to return to their homes East of the Jordan river. Before crossing the river, they build an alter, not for offering sacrifices, but for a witness and reminder. They are afraid that in the future the people West of the Jordan river would come to see the river as the cut off line, that no one East of the Jordan has a portion in the Lord.

2 Chronicles 11:1-4 [1] When Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, one hundred eighty thousand chosen men, who were warriors, to fight against Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam. [2] But Yahweh’s word came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying, [3] “Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying, [4] ‘Thus says Yahweh, “You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers! Return every man to his house; for this thing is of me.”’” So they listened to Yahweh’s words, and returned from going against Jeroboam.
The division of Israel came about because of sin. Yet God did not allow men to fight to unite the kingdom under one earthly king again. They remained as two earthly kingdoms until both were taken away into captivity. While they were divided physically, the two nations could have kept the unity of the spirit had they been diligent to humbly obey and serve the Lord God alone.

2 Chronicles 11:13-17
During the reign of Rehoboam, those of the children of Israel who set their hearts to seek the Lord came to the house of God to worship.

2 Chronicles 15:8-14
During the reign of Asa, men from both the Southern and Northern kingdom were of one heart in seeking and serving the Lord.

2 Chronicles 30:1,4-12
During the reign of Hezekiah, men walking in humility kept the unity of the spirit regardless of their earthly dwelling as they worshiped the one true God during the Passover.

Acts 5:9-14 [9] But Peter asked her, “How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” [10] She fell down immediately at his feet, and died. The young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband. [11] Great fear came on the whole assembly, and on all who heard these things. [12] By the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. They were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. [13] None of the rest dared to join them, however the people honored them. [14] More believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women.
Through this act of Peter, both those within the church and those not part of the church saw plainly that the church is holy. God is in the midst of the church. It is not a light thing to be part of this dwelling place of such a holy God. This great fear on all who heard, this sense of the holiness of God and his house, was not a hindrance but a help to the building of God's kingdom, to the salvation of souls, for we read that more believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women. May God grant us such an understanding in our days.

Other Verses:

Matthew 16:15-18 [15] He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” [16] Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” [17] Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. [18] I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

HOLY

Psalm 89:5 The heavens will praise your wonders, Yahweh; your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.

Psalm 93:5 Your statutes stand firm. Holiness adorns your house, Yahweh, forever more.

Matthew 12:30 “He who is not with me is against me, and he who doesn’t gather with me, scatters.

Acts 5:5,10-14 [5] Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and died. Great fear came on all who heard these things. [10] She fell down immediately at his feet, and died.
God and his church was shown to be holy, and so the people within the church and without it were in great fear. Those outside the church came to see that the decision to join themselves to God and his household (the church) is a weighty matter. It is not a light thing, and should not be a light thing to us today.

Acts 20:28 Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 [16] Don’t you know that you are a temple of God, and that God’s Spirit lives in you? [17] If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, which you are.

Ephesians 5:25-32 [25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it; [26] that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, [27] that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without defect. [28] Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself. [29] For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly; [30] because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones. [31] “For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. The two will become one flesh.” [32] This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and of the assembly.

Revelation 5:9-10 [9] They sang a new song, saying, “You are worthy to take the book, and to open its seals: for you were killed, and bought us for God with your blood, out of every tribe, language, people, and nation, [10] and made us kings and priests to our God, and we will reign on earth.”

CATHOLIC

Isaiah 49:5-6 [5] Now says Yahweh who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, and that Israel be gathered to him (for I am honorable in the eyes of Yahweh, and my God has become my strength); [6] yes, he says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give you for a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth.”

1 Corinthians 1:2 to the assembly of God which is at Corinth; those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, both theirs and ours:

Ephesians 4:1-7 [1] I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called, [2] with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love; [3] being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. [4] There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling; [5] one Lord, one faith, one baptism, [6] one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all. [7] But to each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Colossians 3:9-14 [9] Don’t lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his doings, [10] and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge after the image of his Creator, [11] where there can’t be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bondservant, freeman; but Christ is all, and in all. [12] Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; [13] bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. [14] Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

Revelation 5:9-10 [9] They sang a new song, saying, “You are worthy to take the book, and to open its seals: for you were killed, and bought us for God with your blood, out of every tribe, language, people, and nation, [10] and made us kings and priests to our God, and we will reign on earth.”

Revelation 7:9-10 [9] After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude, which no man could number, out of every nation and of all tribes, peoples, and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, dressed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands. [10] They cried with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation be to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

The Apostles' Creed - Lesson 10: I believe in the Holy Spirit

The Apostles' Creed
Lesson 10: I believe in the Holy Spirit

I believe in God, the Father, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, his only son, our lord;
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead and buried.
He descended into hell,
And on the third day he rose again;
He ascended into heaven,
Where he is now seated at the right hand of God, the Father, Almighty,
Whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The holy, catholic church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.

Amen.

2 Thessalonians 2:13b ...God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth;

Isaiah 11:2-3 [DRC] [2] And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of godliness. [3] And he shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord, He shall not judge according to the sight of the eyes, nor reprove according to the hearing of the ears.
These are called by many the “seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.”

Galatians 5:22-23 [22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, [23] gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

In this lesson we will learn about the first part of this third section: “I believe in the Holy Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit is God. We believe in one God. This one God in whom we believe is three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. They are three persons, and yet they are one God. The Holy Spirit is not a thing to possess and use for our own purposes. To sin against the Holy Spirit is a grave matter (Mark 3:28-30).

The work of the Holy Spirit. God gave the Holy Spirit to many people in the times before Christ. After Jesus ascended into heaven, the Spirit was poured out on the disciples in the upper room. How can the work of the Holy Spirit be described or summed up in one lesson? Some have used the words spoken through Isaiah the prophet (Isaiah 11:2-3 from the Greek and Latin) to sum up the work of the Holy Spirit among men. Perhaps many think of the fruits of the Spirit spoken of by the apostle Paul (Galatians 5:22-23) when they think of the Holy Spirit. (Both the words of Isaiah and the apostle Paul are important for understanding and walking by the Holy Spirit.) At the risk of making too simple what seems a large and difficult subject, I will sum up the work of the Holy Spirit as the work of making men holy that they may be saved.

Sanctifying (to make holy). In scripture, the Spirit is said to convict men of sin, to give life, to lead God's people into the truth, to strengthen and empower us, to seal us, to counsel, etc. It may be reasonable to say that all this is done to make men holy that they may be saved. The Holy Spirit calls men to turn away from sin and to walk in the good and perfect ways of God. The Holy Spirit calls men to leave the idols of this world and to love and serve the true and living God. The Holy Spirit teaches, guides, counsels, and strengthens God's people to walk worthily of the calling with which we have been called, to grow in love for and obedience towards our God. The Holy Spirit is given that the will of God may be carried out on earth by men.

What does it mean to believe this? Those who believe in the Holy Spirit will pursue holiness in their thoughts, words and deeds. God is grieved by our sin, and so we are exhorted, Do not grieve the Holy Spirit. Believing this, the child of God will humbly listen and obey as the Spirit convicts of sin, as it teaches obedience to Jesus' commands. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The apostle Paul gave an answer to the question, “What does it mean to believe in the Holy Spirit?” He wrote, “If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25). That is as much to say, If we believe that we live by the Spirit, then let us walk by the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit (for only thus do we really live by the Spirit – Romans 8:13), so that our life in its daily living may produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Those who believe in the Holy Spirit should find great comfort in knowing that God will give his Holy Spirit to empower all who desire to please him, and they will work out their salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12-13).

Let the children know that today we will talk about the eighth part: I believe in the Holy Spirit.

Explain to the children simply what the Holy Spirit does: The Holy Spirit works to make men holy that they may be saved.

Read Acts 1:4-8. Ask the children why Jesus told the disciples to wait. What would they receive when the Holy Spirit comes upon them? What was the power for?

Read Acts 2:1-8,11b-17,22-24,32-47 (it may be easier to tell the story in your own words). This is the story of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples together in one place. Ask the children to pay attention to what is said about the Holy Spirit. How did the discipled receive it? What was the result of their receiving the Holy Spirit? How could others receive the Holy Spirit? What was the result of that at the end of the story?

Close the lesson with prayer related to the subject and the students. Pray the Lord's Prayer together.

Stories:

Acts 1:4-8 [4] Being assembled together with them, he commanded them, “Don’t depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which you heard from me. [5] For John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” [6] Therefore when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you now restoring the kingdom to Israel?” [7] He said to them, “It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority. [8] But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”

Acts 2:1-8,11b-17,22-24,32-47 [1] Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place. [2] Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. [3] Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. [4] They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak. [5] Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under the sky. [6] When this sound was heard, the multitude came together, and were bewildered, because everyone heard them speaking in his own language. [7] They were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Behold, aren’t all these who speak Galileans? [8] How do we hear, everyone in our own native language? [11] ...we hear them speaking in our languages the mighty works of God!” [12] They were all amazed, and were perplexed, saying one to another, “What does this mean?” [13] Others, mocking, said, “They are filled with new wine.” [14] But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spoke out to them, “You men of Judea, and all you who dwell at Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to my words. [15] For these aren’t drunken, as you suppose, seeing it is only the third hour of the day. [16] But this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel: [17] ‘It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. [22] “Men of Israel, hear these words! Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved by God to you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in your midst, even as you yourselves know, [23] him, being delivered up by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by the hand of lawless men, crucified and killed; [24] whom God raised up, having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it. [32] This Jesus God raised up, to which we all are witnesses. [33] Being therefore exalted by the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this, which you now see and hear. [34] For David didn’t ascend into the heavens, but he says himself, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit by my right hand, [35] until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’ [36] “Let all the house of Israel therefore know certainly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” [37] Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” [38] Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. [39] For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all who are far off, even as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.” [40] With many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!” [41] Then those who gladly received his word were baptized. There were added that day about three thousand souls. [42] They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer. [43] Fear came on every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. [44] All who believed were together, and had all things in common. [45] They sold their possessions and goods, and distributed them to all, according as anyone had need. [46] Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart, [47] praising God, and having favor with all the people. The Lord added to the assembly day by day those who were being saved.

More Stories and Examples:

1 Samuel 10:1-16:14
This is the story of king Saul, from the time that Samuel anointed him, until the Spirit of God departed from him. Note verses 10:10; 11:6; 16:13-14.

Acts 4:17-35
The apostles Peter and John were threatened for speaking in Jesus' name. They returned and told the church. The church prayed and God answered their prayer. This is a good explanation and illustration of Jesus' words in Luke 11:13, “how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT

Psalm 139:7-10 [7] Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? [8] If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! [9] If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; [10] Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

Matthew 3:10-12 [10] “Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire. [11] I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit [TR and NU add “and with fire”]. [12] His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”

Matthew 3:16-17 [16] Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him. [17] Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 28:18-20 [18] Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. [19] Go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND CHRIST JESUS

Isaiah 11:1-5 [1] A shoot will come out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots will bear fruit. [2] The Spirit of Yahweh will rest on him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh. [3] His delight will be in the fear of Yahweh. He will not judge by the sight of his eyes, neither decide by the hearing of his ears; [4] but with righteousness he will judge the poor, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked. [5] Righteousness will be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his waist.

These are called by some the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. It seems that these “seven gifts” describe briefly the extensive work of the Holy Spirit as recorded in God's word.

Isaiah 42:1-7 [1] “Behold, my servant, whom I uphold; my chosen, in whom my soul delights— I have put my Spirit on him. He will bring justice to the nations. [2] He will not shout, nor raise his voice, nor cause it to be heard in the street. [3] He won’t break a bruised reed. He won’t quench a dimly burning wick. He will faithfully bring justice. [4] He will not fail nor be discouraged, until he has set justice in the earth, and the islands will wait for his law.” [5] Thus says God Yahweh, he who created the heavens and stretched them out, he who spread out the earth and that which comes out of it, he who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk in it. [6] “I, Yahweh, have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and make you a covenant for the people, as a light for the nations; [7] to open the blind eyes, to bring the prisoners out of the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness out of the prison.

Isaiah 61:1-4 [1] The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is on me; because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound; [2] to proclaim the year of Yahweh’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; [3] to appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he may be glorified. [4] They shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

Luke 4:16-21 [16] He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. [17] The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written, [18] “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed, [19] and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” [20] He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him. [21] He began to tell them, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

REVEALS JESUS

Luke 1:34-35 [34] Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?” [35] The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.

John 1:29-34 [29] The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! [30] This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’ [31] I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water: that he would be revealed to Israel.” [32] John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him. [33] I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water, he said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ [34] I have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

John 14:23-27 [23] Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him. [24] He who doesn’t love me doesn’t keep my words. The word which you hear isn’t mine, but the Father’s who sent me. [25] I have said these things to you, while still living with you. [26] But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you. [27] Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

John 15:26-27 [26] “When the Counselor has come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me. [27] You will also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

John 16:12-14 [12] “I have yet many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now. [13] However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming. [14] He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it to you.

GIVES LIFE

John 3:3-8 [3] Jesus answered him, “Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, [also “again” or “from above”] he can’t see the Kingdom of God.” [4] Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?” [5] Jesus answered, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into the Kingdom of God! [6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’ [8] The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

John 6:63 It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.

John 7:37-39 [37] Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! [38] He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.” [39] But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.

SANCTIFIES

Romans 15:15-16 [15] But I write the more boldly to you in part, as reminding you, because of the grace that was given to me by God, [16] that I should be a servant of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving as a priest the Good News of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be made acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 [9] Or don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, [10] nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit the Kingdom of God. [11] Such were some of you, but you were washed. But you were sanctified. But you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God.

Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:19-23 [19] Now the works of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, [20] idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, [21] envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. [22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, [23] gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:16-26 [16] But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. [17] For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire. [18] But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. [19] Now the works of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, [20] idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, [21] envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. [22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, [23] gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. [24] Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts. [25] If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit. [26] Let’s not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another.

Ephesians 3:14-16 [14] For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, [15] from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, [16] that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man;

2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 [13] But we are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth; [14] to which he called you through our Good News, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Titus 3:3-7 [3] For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. [4] But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, [5] not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, [6] whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior; [7] that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

John 16:5-12 [5] But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ [6] But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart. [7] Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. [8] When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment; [9] about sin, because they don’t believe in me; [10] about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you won’t see me any more; [11] about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.

Acts 2:1-4 [1] Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Acts 2:14-21 [14] But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spoke out to them, “You men of Judea, and all you who dwell at Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to my words. [18] Yes, and on my servants and on my handmaidens in those days, I will pour out my Spirit, and they will prophesy. [19] I will show wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and billows of smoke. [20] The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes. [21] It will be, that whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Acts 4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “You rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,

THE HOLY SPIRIT IN US

Luke 11:9-13 [9] “I tell you, keep asking, and it will be given you. Keep seeking, and you will find. Keep knocking, and it will be opened to you. [10] For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened. [11] “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he won’t give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? [12] Or if he asks for an egg, he won’t give him a scorpion, will he? [13] If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?
Jesus says that the Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him. Ask him what? Simon the sorcerer (Acts 8:5-25) asked for the power to give the Holy Spirit to whomever he willed. It seems he sought power and glory for himself. He received a rebuke in answer to his request. What should we ask the Father? If we ask for wisdom to win souls (Proverbs 11:30), if we ask for strength and endurance to faithfully follow Jesus, if we ask to grow in godliness and the fear of the Lord that his name may be glorified and we may walk worthy of our calling, then “how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?” Peter and John were threatened by the council. Upon hearing this, the church asked for boldness to speak the word, and that the name of Jesus would be exalted. In answer. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word with boldness (Acts 4:29-31).

John 14:13-18 [13] Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it. [15] If you love me, keep my commandments. [16] I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,— [17] the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you. [18] I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.

John 20:19-23 [19] When therefore it was evening, on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were locked where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be to you.” [20] When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad when they saw the Lord. [21] Jesus therefore said to them again, “Peace be to you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” [22] When he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit! [23] If you forgive anyone’s sins, they have been forgiven them. If you retain anyone’s sins, they have been retained.”

Acts 8:14-20 [14] Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, [15] who, when they had come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit; [16] for as yet he had fallen on none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of Christ Jesus. [17] Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. [18] Now when Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, [19] saying, “Give me also this power, that whomever I lay my hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.” [20] But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!

Romans 8:1-17 [1] There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. [2] For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. [3] For what the law couldn’t do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh; [4] that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [5] For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. [6] For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace; [7] because the mind of the flesh is hostile towards God; for it is not subject to God’s law, neither indeed can it be. [8] Those who are in the flesh can’t please God. [9] But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his. [10] If Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness. [11] But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. [12] So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. [13] For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. [14] For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God. [15] For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” [16] The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God; [17] and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

Romans 8:26-27 [26] In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. [27] He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.

Romans 14:16-17 [16] Then don’t let your good be slandered, [17] for the Kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 [16] Don’t you know that you are a temple of God, and that God’s Spirit lives in you? [17] If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, which you are.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 [4] Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. [5] There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord. [6] There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all. [7] But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all. [8] For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; [9] to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by the same Spirit; [10] and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages. [11] But the one and the same Spirit works all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires.

Ephesians 1:12-17 [12] to the end that we should be to the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ: [13] in whom you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, [14] who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory. [15] For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you, and the love which you have toward all the saints, [16] don’t cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, [17] that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him;

Ephesians 2:18-22 [18] For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. [19] So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God, [20] being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone; [21] in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord; [22] in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

Ephesians 4:25-32 [25] Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another. [26] “Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, [27] neither give place to the devil. [28] Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need. [29] Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. [30] Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. [31] Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. [32] And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
The Spirit of God came mightily upon king Saul (1 Samuel 11:6). The Spirit remained with Saul while he did the work of shepherding the flock of God. Saul began to disobey the commands of God. At some point, because of rebellion against the commands of God, God rejected him as king, and chose another. In doing this, God took his Spirit from Saul, sending upon him then an evil spirit, and giving the Spirit of God to David. Following his sin in the matter of Uriah's wife, David, fearing the Lord, prayed that God would not take his Holy Spirit from him (Psalm 51:11). May we learn from those who have gone before us to walk in faithfulness and humility that we do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.

1 Thessalonians 1:4-7 [4] We know, brothers loved by God, that you are chosen, [5] and that our Good News came to you not in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and with much assurance. You know what kind of men we showed ourselves to be among you for your sake. [6] You became imitators of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, [7] so that you became an example to all who believe in Macedonia and in Achaia.

Revelation 2:29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.
When the Spirit convicts us of sin, when it calls us to say no to sin and yes to righteousness, when the Spirit urges us to forgive and love one another, when it speaks of trials and teaches us of endurance, then let us hear what the Spirit say, and obey.

DIFFERENT SPIRITS

1 Corinthians 12:1-3 [1] Now concerning spiritual things, brothers, I don’t want you to be ignorant. [2] You know that when you were heathen, you were led away to those mute idols, however you might be led. [3] Therefore I make known to you that no man speaking by God’s Spirit says, “Jesus is accursed.” No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” but by the Holy Spirit.

1 John 4:1-3 [1] Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. [2] By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, [3] and every spirit who doesn’t confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God, and this is the spirit of the Antichrist, of whom you have heard that it comes. Now it is in the world already.

Nave's Topical Bible has many references related to the Holy Spirit.

The Apostles' Creed - Lesson 9: Whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead

The Apostles' Creed
Lesson 9: Whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead

I believe in God, the Father, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, his only son, our lord;
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead and buried.
He descended into hell,
And on the third day he rose again;
He ascended into heaven,
Where he is now seated at the right hand of God, the Father, Almighty,
Whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The holy, catholic church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.

Amen.

Acts 10:42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that this is he who is appointed by God as the Judge of the living and the dead.

Matthew 16:27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.

The Four Last Things

3. Think often on the four last things: on death -- there is nothing of which we are more sure; on the Judgment Day -- there is nothing more terrible; on hell -- there is nothing more unbearable; and on heaven -- there is nothing more joyful. He who thinks on these things will shun much sin and will be diligent in the way of salvation.

WHENCE
1. From what place. Whence and what art thou?
2. From what source. Whence shall we derive hope? Whence comes this honor? Whence hath this man this wisdom? Matthew 13.

The second section concerns Jesus Christ, God's only son. In this lesson we will learn about the sixth part of this second section: “Whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.”

After his resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven and sat down at the right hand of the God, the Father, Almighty. From that place, and with the authority of God the Father, Almighty, Jesus will come again with power and great glory (Matthew 24:30) to judge all men, the living and the dead (Acts 10:42). God has spoken of the judgment day in many times and in many ways as recorded in his holy word. Both Jesus and the apostles spoke of Jesus as the man appointed by God the Father to judge all men.

All men will be judged; final. Jesus will judge all men. Both those who have died and those who are still alive at his coming will be judged. The righteous and the unrighteous will stand before the Judge. This judgment is final. It is not temporary.

Judged by our work. Jesus will judge all men based on their works, on their deeds. The great judge will take into account our thoughts and heart (Matthew 5:27-28), he will judge the words of our mouth (Matthew 12:36-37), he will render to everyone according to their deeds (Matthew 16:27). Men's claim to faith will be proved or disproved by their works (James 2:17; Matthew 7:21-23) as seen by the Judge who searches the hearts and minds (Jeremiah 17:10; Psalm 7:9).

Only two outcomes. Jesus often spoke of judgment and the coming judgment day. He spoke of only two outcomes for men at the judgment. These two outcomes can be summed up by two phrases: “Well done, good and faithful servant”; and “Depart from me, I never knew you, you who practiced lawlessness.” Or again: “Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world”; and “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:34,41). In all his teaching on the coming judgment, Jesus did not speak of a third outcome, he offered no possible middle ground on the Day of the Lord.

God takes sin seriously. God is patient with us so that all men may come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). Some people take God's patience to mean that God doesn't care if we walk in the path of sin (Psalm 50:21). The apostle Paul warns the children of God to not be deceived about this (Galatians 6:7-10). Whatever we sow, we will reap. If we plant sunflower seeds, we will have sunflowers. If we plant sinful seeds by walking in sin, we will reap destruction. If we plant spiritual seeds, by faithfully doing good from the heart, we will reap eternal life.

Joy and terror. The coming of Jesus Christ to judge all men should be a joy to the righteous. They will receive the blessed reward of their labors and sufferings. They will be justified in the sight of all men, especially before those who persecuted them. At the same time, the coming judgment should be a terror to those living in sin. Living for earthly pleasure and bliss, they will be cast out from the presence of God and from eternal bliss. Yet, God desires all men to repent. God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked would repent and live (Ezekiel 18:23).

What does it mean to believe this? Those who believe that Christ will come again to judge the living and the dead will prepare themselves (and those they love) for the coming judgment, that they may hear “well done” on that day. They will also persevere in seeking God and doing good, knowing that God will reward them on that Last Day. Those who believe this will also warn those living in sin about the coming judgment, that they may learn to fear the Lord, repent of sin and turn to God.

In his word, through his servants, and his son, God often speaks of the coming judgment and teaches his people how they may be prepared for that day, that they may hear “well done.” We must love and obey God with our whole being, and love our neighbor as ourselves (Luke 10:25-28). We are exhorted to watch and pray continually, so that the day of judgment does not come upon us suddenly and find us unprepared for it. In his love for us, God has taught us in many ways how to live so that we may be ready at his coming and judgment: fear God, keep his commandments, seek the Lord, seek righteousness, seek humility, be merciful to others (showing kindness to those in need), forgive others (don't hold grudges or anger in your heart), watch and pray, repent of sin, sow to the spirit (by doing good to others), love one another (love covers a multitude of sins), be self-controlled.

Jesus, along with the apostles and prophets, teaches us that we will be judged according to our works, according to how we have lived. Does that mean that we can “earn” eternal life, such that someone could possibly say that God “owes” them eternal life, or even that someone could gain eternal life apart from God by their own works? No. God alone possesses and gives eternal life.

From the scriptures we understand that God does not give eternal life to everyone without condition. Rather, we find that God gives eternal life to those who fully follow the Lord, to those who love him with all their heart, mind, soul and strength and love their neighbor as themselves, to those who do the will of the Father in heaven, such being the children of God and the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ.

Let the children know that today we will talk about the seventh part: …Whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

Read Matthew 25:31-46. In these verses, Jesus teaches about his coming again to judge all men. You can ask the children questions related to this story and the judgment, such as: How did Jesus come? How did he separate the people? What was the difference between the two groups? By what measure did Jesus judge them? What do you think the “sheep” were thinking? What were the “goats” thinking? What was the final outcome for each group? Was this a joyful day for some and a terrible day for others? Can you think of anything you might do in this life if you want the judgment day to be a joyful day for you?

You could talk with the children about the idea of being ready for the judgment day. Mention to them the two beatitudes, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God,” and “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” Ask them if these give some ideas about being ready for the judgment day.

If you still have time, you could ask them about the two comings of Jesus Christ. What is similar about his two comings? (Both were prophesied beforehand; both were/will be, in one way or another, unexpected.) What are the differences between his two comings? (He came the first time in humility and meekness, the second time he will come with power and great glory; He came first to call men to repentance, the second time he will come to judge all men.)

Close the lesson with prayer related to the subject and the students. Pray the Lord's Prayer together.

Stories:

Matthew 25:31-46 [31] “But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. [32] Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. [33] He will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. [34] Then the King will tell those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; [35] for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in. [36] I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’ [37] “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you; or thirsty, and give you a drink? [38] When did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you? [39] When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’ [40] “The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ [41] Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; [42] for I was hungry, and you didn’t give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; [43] I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me in; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ [44] “Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?’ [45] “Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’ [46] These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Jesus often spoke of the coming judgment using parables. He does not present this to us as a parable.

THE DAY OF THE LORD

The prophets of the Old Testament warned God's people time and again of the coming of the Day of the Lord, that is, the day of judgment, when God would judge all men. They spoke of this day to encourage the righteous to persevere in the way. Perhaps much more, they spoke of the Day of the Lord to cause the hearts of sinners to fear, and in that fear of the Lord, to repent of their sins and turn to God. While this day was described with fearful and terrible words, yet even the most wicked who turned from his sin to seek righteousness and humility was given hope. At the same time, those who, while going on in sin, desired the Day of the Lord to come, were warned that the Day would be to them darkness (Amos 5:18-20) and not the light they expected.

Zephaniah 1:14-18;2:1-3 [1:14] The great day of Yahweh is near. It is near, and hurries greatly, the voice of the day of Yahweh. The mighty man cries there bitterly. [15] That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness, [16] a day of the trumpet and alarm, against the fortified cities, and against the high battlements. [17] I will bring distress on men, that they will walk like blind men, because they have sinned against Yahweh, and their blood will be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. [18] Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of Yahweh’s wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land. [2:1] Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together, you nation that has no shame, [2] before the appointed time when the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of Yahweh comes on you, before the day of Yahweh’s anger comes on you. [3] Seek Yahweh, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh’s anger.

Malachi 4:1-6 [1] “For, behold, the day comes, it burns as a furnace; and all the proud, and all who work wickedness, will be stubble; and the day that comes will burn them up,” says Yahweh of Armies, “that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. [2] But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall. [3] You shall tread down the wicked; for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I make,” says Yahweh of Armies. [4] “Remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded to him in Horeb for all Israel, even statutes and ordinances. [5] Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes. [6] He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

COME AGAIN

Acts 1:9-11 [9] When he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. [10] While they were looking steadfastly into the sky as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white clothing, [11] who also said, “You men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who was received up from you into the sky will come back in the same way as you saw him going into the sky.”

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 [13] But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. [14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. [15] For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left to the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep. [16] For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first, [17] then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever. [18] Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, including those who pierced him. All the tribes of the earth will mourn over him. Even so, Amen.

WILL COME SUDDENLY

Matthew 24:23-51 [23] “Then if any man tells you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or, ‘There,’ don’t believe it. [24] For there will arise false christs, and false prophets, and they will show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones. [25] “Behold, I have told you beforehand. [26] If therefore they tell you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ don’t go out; ‘Behold, he is in the inner rooms,’ don’t believe it. [27] For as the lightning flashes from the east, and is seen even to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. [28] For wherever the carcass is, there is where the vultures gather together. [29] But immediately after the oppression of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; [30] and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. [31] He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other. [32] “Now from the fig tree learn this parable. When its branch has now become tender, and produces its leaves, you know that the summer is near. [33] Even so you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. [34] Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away, until all these things are accomplished. [35] Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. [36] But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only. [37] “As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. [38] For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ship, [39] and they didn’t know until the flood came, and took them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. [40] Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one will be left; [41] two women grinding at the mill, one will be taken and one will be left. [42] Watch therefore, for you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes. [43] But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. [44] Therefore also be ready, for in an hour that you don’t expect, the Son of Man will come. [45] “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has set over his household, to give them their food in due season? [46] Blessed is that servant whom his lord finds doing so when he comes. [47] Most certainly I tell you that he will set him over all that he has. [48] But if that evil servant should say in his heart, ‘My lord is delaying his coming,’ [49] and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with the drunkards, [50] the lord of that servant will come in a day when he doesn’t expect it, and in an hour when he doesn’t know it, [51] and will cut him in pieces, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.

Luke 12:35-48 [35] “Let your waist be dressed and your lamps burning. [36] Be like men watching for their lord, when he returns from the marriage feast; that, when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him. [37] Blessed are those servants, whom the lord will find watching when he comes. Most certainly I tell you, that he will dress himself, and make them recline, and will come and serve them. [38] They will be blessed if he comes in the second or third watch, and finds them so. [39] But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not allowed his house to be broken into. [40] Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you don’t expect him.” [41] Peter said to him, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?” [42] The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times? [43] Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes. [44] Truly I tell you, that he will set him over all that he has. [45] But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My lord delays his coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken, [46] then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn’t expecting him, and in an hour that he doesn’t know, and will cut him in two, and place his portion with the unfaithful. [47] That servant, who knew his lord’s will, and didn’t prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes, [48] but he who didn’t know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.

Luke 17:20-37 [20] Being asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The Kingdom of God doesn’t come with observation; [21] neither will they say, ‘Look, here!’ or, ‘Look, there!’ for behold, the Kingdom of God is within you.” [22] He said to the disciples, “The days will come, when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. [23] They will tell you, ‘Look, here!’ or ‘Look, there!’ Don’t go away, nor follow after them, [24] for as the lightning, when it flashes out of the one part under the sky, shines to the other part under the sky; so will the Son of Man be in his day. [25] But first, he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. [26] As it was in the days of Noah, even so will it be also in the days of the Son of Man. [27] They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ship, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. [28] Likewise, even as it was in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; [29] but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from the sky, and destroyed them all. [30] It will be the same way in the day that the Son of Man is revealed. [31] In that day, he who will be on the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not go down to take them away. Let him who is in the field likewise not turn back. [32] Remember Lot’s wife! [33] Whoever seeks to save his life loses it, but whoever loses his life preserves it. [34] I tell you, in that night there will be two people in one bed. The one will be taken, and the other will be left. [35] There will be two grinding grain together. One will be taken, and the other will be left.” [36] “Two will be in the field: the one taken, and the other left.” [37] They, answering, asked him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there will the vultures also be gathered together.”

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 [1] But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you. [2] For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. [3] For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape. [4] But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief. [5] You are all children of light, and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to darkness, [6] so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober. [7] For those who sleep, sleep in the night, and those who are drunk are drunk in the night. [8] But let us, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation. [9] For God didn’t appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, [10] who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. [11] Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

2 Peter 3:7-14 [7] But the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. [8] But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. [9] The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. [10] But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. [11] Therefore since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness, [12] looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? [13] But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. [14] Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without defect and blameless in his sight.

JUDGE THE LIVING AND THE DEAD

John 5:22-30 [22] For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son, [23] that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him. [24] “Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. [25] Most certainly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God’s voice; and those who hear will live. [26] For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself. [27] He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. [28] Don’t marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice, [29] and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. [30] I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I don’t seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me.

Acts 10:34-43 [34] Peter opened his mouth and said, “Truly I perceive that God doesn’t show favoritism; [35] but in every nation he who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him. [36] The word which he sent to the children of Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all— [37] you yourselves know what happened, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; [38] even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. [39] We are witnesses of everything he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they also killed, hanging him on a tree. [40] God raised him up the third day, and gave him to be revealed, [41] not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen before by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. [42] He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that this is he who is appointed by God as the Judge of the living and the dead. [43] All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him will receive remission of sins.”

Romans 14:7-12 [7] For none of us lives to himself, and none dies to himself. [8] For if we live, we live to the Lord. Or if we die, we die to the Lord. If therefore we live or die, we are the Lord’s. [9] For to this end Christ died, rose, and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. [10] But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. [11] For it is written, “‘As I live,’ says the Lord, ‘to me every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess to God.’” [12] So then each one of us will give account of himself to God.

2 Timothy 4:1-2,7-8 [1] I command you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his Kingdom: [2] preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching. [7] I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. [8] From now on, there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.

1 Peter 4:1-5 [1] Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind; for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin; [2] that you no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. [3] For we have spent enough of our past time doing the desire of the Gentiles, and having walked in lewdness, lusts, drunken binges, orgies, carousings, and abominable idolatries. [4] They think it is strange that you don’t run with them into the same excess of riot, blaspheming: [5] who will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

WILL JUDGE US BASED ON OUR WORKS, OUR DEEDS

Psalm 62:12 Also to you, Lord, belongs loving kindness, for you reward every man according to his work.

Proverbs 24:11-12 [11] Rescue those who are being led away to death! Indeed, hold back those who are staggering to the slaughter! [12] If you say, “Behold, we didn’t know this”; doesn’t he who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, doesn’t he know it? Shall he not render to every man according to his work?

Jeremiah 17:10 I, Yahweh, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings. [see also Jeremiah 32:19]

Matthew 7:1-2 [1] “Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. [2] For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you.

Matthew 7:21-23 [21] Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. [22] Many will tell me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’ [23] Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity.’

Matthew 16:27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.

Romans 2:5-10 [5] But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath, revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God; [6] who “will pay back to everyone according to their works:” [7] to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory, honor, and incorruptibility, eternal life; [8] but to those who are self-seeking, and don’t obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, will be wrath and indignation, [9] oppression and anguish, on every soul of man who works evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. [10] But glory, honor, and peace go to every man who works good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Romans 2:13-16 [13] For it isn’t the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified [14] (for when Gentiles who don’t have the law do by nature the things of the law, these, not having the law, are a law to themselves, [15] in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying with them, and their thoughts among themselves accusing or else excusing them) [16] in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my Good News, by Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:9-10 [9] Therefore also we make it our aim, whether at home or absent, to be well pleasing to him. [10] For we must all be revealed before the judgment seat of Christ; that each one may receive the things in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Revelation 2:23 I will kill her children with Death, and all the assemblies will know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

Revelation 20:11-15 [11] I saw a great white throne, and him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. There was found no place for them. [12] I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works. [13] The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works. [14] Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. [15] If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 22:12-14 [12] “Behold, I come quickly. My reward is with me, to repay to each man according to his work. [13] I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. [14] Blessed are those who do his commandments,* that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city. [*NU reads “wash their robes” instead of “do his commandments”.]

JUDGE US BASED ON...

Matthew 12:36-37 [36] I tell you that every idle word that men speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. [37] For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 [9] Or don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, [10] nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit the Kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21 [19] Now the works of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, [20] idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, [21] envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

2 Thessalonians 1:6-10 [6] Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you, [7] and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, [8] giving vengeance to those who don’t know God, and to those who don’t obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus, [9] who will pay the penalty: eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might, [10] when he comes to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired among all those who have believed (because our testimony to you was believed) in that day.

PREPARE FOR THE COMING JUDGMENT

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 [13] This is the end of the matter. All has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. [14] For God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it is good, or whether it is evil.

Zephaniah 2:1-3 [1] Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together, you nation that has no shame, [2] before the appointed time when the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of Yahweh comes on you, before the day of Yahweh’s anger comes on you. [3] Seek Yahweh, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh’s anger.

Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Matthew 6:14-15 [14] “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. [15] But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Mark 13:33-37 [33] Watch, keep alert, and pray; for you don’t know when the time is. [34] “It is like a man, traveling to another country, having left his house, and given authority to his servants, and to each one his work, and also commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch. [35] Watch therefore, for you don’t know when the lord of the house is coming, whether at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning; [36] lest coming suddenly he might find you sleeping. [37] What I tell you, I tell all: Watch.”

Luke 21:34-36 [34] “So be careful, or your hearts will be loaded down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day will come on you suddenly. [35] For it will come like a snare on all those who dwell on the surface of all the earth. [36] Therefore be watchful all the time, praying that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Acts 17:30-31 [30] The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent, [31] because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.”

Galatians 6:7-10 [7] Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. [8] For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. [9] Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up. [10] So then, as we have opportunity, let’s do what is good toward all men, and especially toward those who are of the household of the faith.

1 Timothy 4:16 Pay attention to yourself, and to your teaching. Continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Hebrews 4:11-14 [11] Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience. [12] For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. [13] There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account. [14] Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession.

James 2:13 For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

1 Peter 4:7-8 [7] But the end of all things is near. Therefore be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer. [8] And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.

Revelation 3:2-3 [2] Wake up, and keep the things that remain, which you were about to throw away, for I have found no works of yours perfected before my God. [3] Remember therefore how you have received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If therefore you won’t watch, I will come as a thief, and you won’t know what hour I will come upon you.
