The Beatitudes –
Resources
Below are three sections of resources.
At present, all the resources mentioned are online resources.
My hope related to these lessons is
that parents will use them and the resources to teach their own
children about the living God and the path that leads to eternal
life.
SECTION 1. The following
resources are for the parent (and/or teacher). I hope they may assist
parents in understanding the beatitudes more clearly, and so help
parents to put these things into practice in their own lives and then
teach them to their children.
“Matthew Henry Commentary on the
Whole Bible (Concise) – Matthew 5.”
This page includes Matthew Henry's
concise comments on the whole of Matthew 5. His comments on verses
1-12 provide some good thoughts regarding the beatitudes.
“The Eight
Beatitudes of Jesus.” Author unkown.*
This page provides
a basic introduction to and simple explanation of the beatitudes.
*the author's
name is not given, but information about him can be found at the
following link: http://www.jesuschristsavior.net/
“Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole
Bible – Matthew 5.”
This page includes Albert Barnes notes
on all of Matthew chapter 5. In verses 3-12, he gives his comments on
the beatitudes.
“Article 2:
Our Vocation to Beatitude.” Catechism of the Catholic Church,
Part 3, Section 1, Chapter 1.
This article looks
at the beatitudes from a more general, overall view. It has a
different, but interesting, perspective.
“8 Sermons:
The Beatitudes.” John Piper (on the Desiring God website).
[AUDIO.]
In these eight
messages (about 30-40 minutes each), John Piper looks at the
beatitudes. You can both read and listen to these messages.
SECTION 2.
This section contains resources designed to help parents explain the
beatitudes to their children.
“DLTK's Bible
Stories for Children: The Sermon on the Mount.” Leanne
Guenther.
This article is an
example of what to teach children about the beatitudes. While I do
not find this the best explanation of the beatitudes for children, it
is an example, and does have some good points made in a simple manner
to be understood by children.
“Teaching the
Beatitudes to Children.” BSF Home Training Lesson; Matthew
Lesson 5, Series III. Bible Study Fellowship.
The goal of Bible
Study Fellowship (BSF) is to teach the Bible. They provide on their
website (https://www.bsfinternational.org/home-training-lesson)
several “Home Training Lessons,” that is, lessons to help parents
teach their children the Bible at home. This particular lesson
provides another way to understand and teach the beatitudes to
children by contrasting two paths to happiness – the world's path,
and God's path.
SECTION 3.
In this section you will find resources such as crafts, puzzles,
games, etc. that relate to the beatitudes.
“The
Beatitudes.” The Catholic Toolbox; Blog; Sunday, October 11,
2009.
Under the title of
the blog is an explanation of its purpose: ““Tools” for the
Classroom or at Home: activities, crafts, games, puzzles, worksheets,
lesson plans, classroom tips, etc. for all ages.” This page on “The
Beatitudes” is a large collection of links to other sites which
contain lessons, crafts, games, puzzles, etc. related to the
beatitudes.
Deuteronomy 11:18-21
[18] Therefore you shall
lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul.
You shall bind them for
a sign on your hand,
and they shall be for
frontlets between your eyes.
[19] You shall teach
them [to] your children,
talking of them,
when you sit in your
house,
and when you walk by the
way,
and when you lie down,
and when you rise up.
[20] You shall write
them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates;
[21] that your days may
be multiplied,
and the days of your
children,
in the land which Yahweh
swore to your fathers to give them,
as the days of the
heavens above the earth.
